HYPE02 :: Dallas

1 :: Are you in Dallas tonight?

2 :: Need something artistic and charitable to do?

3 :: Would you like to hang out with some relatively cool people and look at pretty pictures/artwork while listening to awesome jazz music and sipping on a complimentary cocktail?

4 :: If you answered 'yes' to any of the above.... then join us TONIGHT from 8pm-12am for HYPE02!

HYPE is a holiday party thrown by a family of artists with the simple purpose of bringing friends together to experience, interact with, and purchase new art, while listening to good music, and enjoying community. Throughout the course of the evening, artwork from carefully selected artists would be up for auction — the majority of those profits will return to the the artist and the remainder will benefit Fuel.ph, a charity in the Philippines. 100% of profits from the door & bar will be donated to Fuel.ph. The showing and auction will be hosted in the old Dallas Power and Light building of the Cedars neighborhood from 8pm-12am December 22nd, 2011 [also known as, TONIGHT!] in Dallas, Texas.

With beginnings in Deep Ellum in 2008, HYPE/01 was a success, with an attendance of over 600. Every artist sold work in the auction, and over $5,000 was raised for Sowers of Seeds, a water-based charity in India. This year is only going to be better!

What A View + Week(end) Roll Call

Wish that view is what I was looking at now instead of the weather.com forecast's prediction of snow tomorrow. Mexico was the perfect trip at the perfect time. Nothing says relaxation to me than laying by a pool, walking along the beach and having delicious meals in perfect weather. Now, how can we go back once a month?!

It sure was hard to get back into the swing of things post Mexico, but here's the scoop ::

- Sloane Crosley is one my favorite writers plus she's a New Yorker, if you need a good laugh, be sure to read her books 'I Was Told There'd Be Cake' and 'How Did You Get This Number'. She wrote an article for Bon Appetit on the American family Thanksgiving...... and it's spot on!

- I've been eyeing the leopard flat movement since, oh, August.... but I could never talk myself into the price tag of those pretty Sam Edelman ones or even the Steve Madden version. So imagine my excitement when I saw the BP version at Nordstrom for a fraction of the cost....victory!

- Came across an adorable, simple and classic blog / shop named 'Old Faithful'. Great products for guys and handmade home goods.

- Who knew the Ace Hotel has a blog?!

- 'Charity in Color' - a great way to make your jean purchase go the extra mile. J Brand Jeans have teamed up with City Year to help promote education. City Year is an education focused non-profit that is wholly focused on fighting the national dropout crisis. J Brand are committed to selling 1000 pairs of 'City Year' style jeans to aid in their efforts and raise awareness for the work City Year is doing.

- Fan of Adele? Yea, who isn't. Well, keep an eye on this young one (note the braces - she's all of 15 years old) as she becomes the next UK sensation. Birdy's video for 'People Help The People' is hauntingly good and mature for a girl her age.

- I know, can't believe I'm doing this.... but a group of us are going to see Paranomal Activity 3 tonight....... and then probably go directly to a bar for a stiff drink on ice to help get to sleep. That's been our ritual after seeing the last two. Healthy?.... dunno. Does it work?.... you betcha!

What is everyone going to be for Halloween? Me.... I've been a whoopee cushion the past few years, and it was the smartest decision ever. Share your costume selections!

WORN :: For Peace, For Hope, For Fashion

As you may have noticed, mixed in throughout my posts on lighthearted things such as lipstick, shoes and my outfits, I have tried to be sure there are glimpses into what I think matters above all else....... helping those in need and staying educated on ways to fight against injustice. In most Friday posts, I highlight a non-profit or charitable organization that is doing something bold that week or have launched a new campaign or have hit a huge milestone. In my 'Links' section, you will find the 'Connect + Contribute' list with organizations I support, believe in and know are fighting to make a huge impact on the lives of others. Mainly people I admire. We can all learn a lot from their selflessness.

I'd like you to meet Abbi Martin Ice and her incredible organization - WORN. You've probably seen me mention it on here a few times.... I'm just so proud of all the women I'm lucky to call family! Anyways, I was very excited to see this recent article in '360 West Magazine' on Abbi, the refugee families and the vision of WORN. Quick recap of WORN if you didn't catch the other posts or don't follow me on Twitter (where I also preach about WORN nearly every day) ::

"WORN is a socially-conscious business of Fort Worth Catholic Charities. The mission of WORN is to provide refugee women living in the United States a supplemental source of income, empowering them to rise above poverty. Each circle scarf is hand-knit by women who have survived the afflictions of their war-torn and poverty-stricken homelands.

WORN is here to foster their journey. More than just a scarf, WORN symbolizes:

  • Peace - Teaching that peace is more than just security, it’s dignity
  • Hope - Enabling refugees to find value in both product and self
  • Fashion - Making a statement for those in need by wearing it over the heart

100% of the profits from this project go directly back into the community through Fort Worth Catholic Charities to further equip the women with the necessary skills to become self-sufficient."

Read the article (pg:122-124) and become connected with WORN :: Website, Twitter, Blog

My hope is to do annual posts introducing you to people and organizations doing powerful things for others. If anything you've read prompts you to want to get involved, to reach out or to help Abbi and WORN, please feel free to email me parkeretc@gmail.com and I'll put you in contact or reach out to Abbi at abbi@wornforpeace.com.

(We will return to our regularly scheduled programming of outfits and hair trends tomorrow....and yes....that girl in the group photo with the black scarf does look familiar!!)
