hatch baby changing table review

Let’s rewind a little over three years ago when Parker was born and we were at home for the first time… on our own… and without those helpful nurses and all their gadgets checking up on your new tiny baby. Nursing wasn’t really going so well, as I’ve openly shared about a few times, and well…. things were just stressful. Aside from just being nervous about every little thing as new parents, most of that stress revolved around one thing…. breast feeding.

Upon leaving the hospital, the nurses kindly bid you adieu and then remind you to track those wet and dirty diapers to ensure your baby is getting enough food. I don’t know about you, but we took that VERY SERIOUSLY. Eric had an ironclad excel spreadsheet set up with columns for wet diapers, dirty diapers, how much milk she was eating from bottles, how much I was making when I pumped, how long she was sleeping and at what hours. I mean…. it was like Eric’s dream and my nightmare. For me, using Excel is like trying to speak Mandarin Chinese. My brain just doesn’t compute. On top of that, every time I tried to nurse her, I had no idea how much she was actually eating and it nearly drove me crazy. That is one of the hardest and most common struggles for breastfeeding moms, especially if your baby is like mine and enjoys a hearty spit up after a feeding. For the first three months, Parker had some serious issues with nursing and I would stress myself out trying to calculate how much, if anything, she was actually getting when she nursed. I just wanted peace of mind.

Then, one evening we had Shark Tank on in the background while we were working and this magical changing table came on called Hatch Baby. I sat there in awe of this product and just looked at Eric and said…. ‘That is genius’. This changing table logs your babies feedings (time, duration and side), diapers, weight and sleep. Like a Fitbit…. for your newborn! It takes the guessing game out of it all and let's you know from day one whether or not your baby is growing and thriving. Also, because this is 2016 after all, everything syncs to an App on your phone so you can review and record it all in one handy dandy place. Forget to log that diaper last time you changed her and now she’s asleep in your arms? No worries, you don’t have to be at the changing table itself to log everything. You can also update from the App directly while lounging in your rocking chair. They’ve made it that easy. Other caretakers like your spouse, nanny, babysitter, pediatrician, mother can all also download the app so all of the information stays logged in the one place and is accessible from anywhere.

Fast forward to me nine months pregnant with Sidney Sloane and thinking about the trauma, stress and that feeling of not being in control those first months with a baby. I was pretty honest about my lack of enthusiasm towards the newborn stage, mainly because I directly associated it with all the worry and sleepless nights over feedings. I was so relieved when the Hatch Baby Changing Pad arrived that I could sense this sigh of relief come over me and I started to actual anticipate and look forward to the newborn stage. I knew we’d have that coveted peace of mind with this baby and that I’d never have to look at an Excel doc of diapers again!

Key things I especially love about it:

Light Weight: It’s like 9lbs and can easily be moved. It also fits standard changing tables.

Aesthetically pleasing: Some baby gear can be an eye sore. This is not one of those products. It’s super pretty, sleek and comes in neutral and calming colors.

Weighted feeds: I could weigh her, then feed her and then weigh her again and know exactly how much she ate.

Easy to use: I can operate this changing table and the App much easier than I will ever know how to use fancy short cut key strokes on an Excel doc.

Tracking: It tracks all of what you need to know and none of the stuff you don’t.

Sharing: It’s a relief that our nanny, my husband, my mother-in-law can all update it as well and that information is stored in a single place.
